Designed for beginners, new residents, and seasoned naturalists alike, this course blends classroom learning with field study to cultivate keen observation, ecological literacy, and a richer connection to the natural world. Whether you are just beginning your naturalist journey or have spent a lifetime exploring these landscapes, you will gain new insights into the distinctive ecosystems of the Highlands.
Sessions will be held Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Highlands Center for Natural History, combining indoor instruction with outdoor exploration.

Retreat Experience
Tuition includes a special three-day, two-night retreat (October 27–29, 2026) at a private forest lodge near Heber-Overgaard. This all-inclusive retreat offers an opportunity to step fully into the rhythms of the natural world while learning alongside fellow participants in a beautiful montane setting.
